The Muffler Explained
The role of the muffler is quite self-explanatory. It essentially muffles the noise and vibration generated by the rumbling engine. Without the muffler, the car would make an exceptionally loud noise, the kind of sound associated with a running engine.
The noise would be highly audible in the car cabin and make for an uncomfortable ride. Some sports and race cars deliberately have the muffler suppressed in order to produce an impressive engine roar.
Apart from reducing engine sound volume, the muffler also has a secondary role of creating back pressure and reducing exhaust flow. It should also be noted that by law, cars are required to have a functioning muffler.
Signs of a Worn Muffler
Like all car parts, the muffler wears with time and age. Rust is a major problem that occurs when moisture gets inside the component. This creates condensation that inhibits its ability to reduce the auditory vibration.
The biggest giveaway of a faulty muffler is a gradually increasing engine sound. You may also notice an increase in engine misfires. A visual inspection of the muffler may also reveal signs of rust and holes stemming from corrosion.
