As we mentioned in the first blog post this month, the Kia brand was named the highest scoring nameplate in J.D. Power’s 2016 Initial Quality Study. This is a huge feat, seeing as the auto manufacturer was up against 33 other automakers in the U.S., and is a huge accomplishment because it is the first time in 27 years that a non-premium brand has topped the list. J.D. Power decides on the winners of the Initial Quality Study based on the responses from vehicle owners in 25 different segments. Drivers evaluate their vehicles in driving experience, engine and transmission performance, and a broad range of quality-related problems within the first 90 days of ownership.
“Ranking highest in the entire industry for initial quality is the result of Kia decade-long focus on craftsmanship and continuous improvement, and reflects the voice of our customers, which is the ultimate affirmation,” said Michael Sprague, Chief Operating Officer and EVP, Kia Motors America. “As the highest ranked brand in the industry, there is no doubt Kia is a first-class automaker.”
There were a variety of vehicles that helped win this top ranking spot. The 2016 Kia Sportage and the 2016 Kia Soul each led their segment, the 2016 Kia Forte and 2016 Kia Sorento placed second in their segment, and the 2016 Kia Rio placed third in its segment. The Kia brand was in the Initial Quality Study top 10 for the first time in 2013 and in 2015 was second in the industry and first in non-premium makes.
